After orthodontic treatment,maintaining long-term stability requires both fixed and removable retainers. Studies have shown that dental movements can still occur for up to 20 years after treatment, regardless of whether the wisdom teeth have been extracted or not.
The risk of relapse is highest within the first year after treatment completion. Retainer check-ups should be scheduled every 3 months during the first year, every 6 months during the second year, and annually thereafter.
